August and Hermann Upmann founded H. Upmann cigars in 1844. It was this year that they bought the famous Upmann factory, also known as the Jose Marti Factory, which is located in Havana, Cuba. H. Upmann cigars gained popularity throughout the 19th century, and it won various gold metals, which still adorn the beautiful boxes of H. Upmann cigars to this day. The Upmann family was also famous for being very successful bankers, which some say allowed for the creation of their cigar line. Whatever it may be, what is known is that in the 1920's, the cigar brand as well as the bank went under. This resulted in the brand being bought by J. Frankau & Company, who continued to produce it until 1935. At this time, the brand was sold again to Menendez, Garcia, y Cia, the famous cigar family that has been consistent with quality for many years. They continued production of H. Upmann cigars throughout the Cuban Revolution as well. It was during this time of disorder that the H. Upmann Montecristo Selection cigar was created. This was actually the origins of the Montecristo cigar, as the H. Upmann blend was so successful that they decided to create a new line specifically dedicated to that cigar.
During this time period, a legend exists which states that President John. F. Kennedy's favorite cigar was the H. Upmann Petit Upmann. The night before the embargo to Cuba was signed, he made the White House Press Secretary, Pierre Salinger, gather over twelve hundred Petit Upmann's so he could stock up before they weren't available. Wish we all had that advance notice...However, after the Cuban Revolution, Menendez and Garcia decided to move their production first to the Canary Islands, and then to the Dominican Republic. This was a strategic business move on their part in order to cater to the cigar business in the United States that could no longer enjoy a Cuban cigar. This moment in history of H. Upmann cigars is where Altadis played a major role, which is the company who oversaw production on the Dominican version of H. Upmann. Although there still is the Cuban H.
