The history behind Joya de Nicaragua is very rich, and somewhat complicated. The Joya de Nicaragua cigar goes back to the 1970's, where it even replaced the cigar of choice in the White House, which was the Cuban cigar. Joya de Nicaragua began to stumble as a company after the Sandinista Revolution, which resulted in the nationalization of industry. Joya de Nicaragua was faced with a harsh reality in 1990, after Daniel Ortega lost the election, the workers were given the business so they could have some money to live on. Imagine, eighty workers with no leader, in a mere two years the company was in turmoil. Alejandro Martinez Cuenca bought the struggling company in 1994 for $400,000, and being a Sandinista himself, he vowed to bring back the Joya de Nicaragua of old and give it the proper respect it deserved.

During the embargo, Joya de Nicaragua was actually made in Honduras, but now they are Nicaraguan Puros. The initial cigar boom of the 1990's allowed for Cuenca to gain profits with the classic Joya de Nicaragua line. The classic Joya de Nicaragua cigar is offered in either Natural or Maduro, and features only the highest-grade premium Nicaraguan tobacco for the binder as well as the filler. The Joya de Nicaragua cigar is ideal for the full-bodied smoker looking for an everyday smoke that’s not too overpowering.

The classic Joya de Nicaragua cigar made way for their best selling line yet, the Joya de Nicaraguan Antaño cigar. Antaño actually means circa in Spanish, which is exactly what Cuenca was going for, to bring back the Joya de Nicaragua days of old. The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño was released in 2000, and was a crucial product for Cuenca. The boom had since past, and he was using his financial reserves to produce a cigar that he thought was excellent. The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño were Cuenca’s cigar, the cigar that he knew would put Joya back on the map. This full bodied cigar has it all, it packs quite the punch, but maintains a smooth, spicy flavor throughout the entire smoke. Using a Nicaraguan Habana Criollo wrapper, and Nicaraguan Habano tobacco for the binder and filler, the Joya de Nicaragua Antaño cigar should always have a place in your humidor.

Fortunately for Cuenca, the Antaño became a hit with smokers in the United States and this allowed for a new Joya de Nicaragua line, the Celebración. The Celebración is a full-bodied cigar as well, but it’s not as strong as the Antaño. Cuenca actually prefers the Celebración to the Antaño because it is almost as powerful, but much smoother.
