Mysteriously enough, the first Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey cigars were born of seed smuggled from Cuba in a diplomatic pouch. Today, in the uncompromising style of cigar master Estelo Padrón, Hoyo de Monterrey cigars are still made the nineteenth-century way, cured and aged in their own time by the wind and the weather as nature intended. The resulting full-bodied cigars are as deeply satisfying as they are authentically Honduran.

The original Hoyo de Monterrey was the 1865 inspiration of José Gener, one of the most respected growers in Cuba's famed Vuelta Abajo. Since the early 1970s, an equally illustrious Hoyo de Monterrey tradition has been firmly established in Honduras under the masterful guidance of cigar master Estelo Padrón. In its own full-bodied way, the Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey is, in the judgment of many, more Cuban in character than the Cuban Hoyo.

An authentic Honduran cigar from its head to its tuck, Hoyo de Monterrey is crafted with Cuban-seed tobacco carefully cultivated in the richest Honduran soil. Made "en la manera de los Indios" (the Indian way) the Hoyo de Monterrey cigar is still simply a product of the sun, the wind, and the soil.

So it was with Estelo Padrón when he discovered an unusually dark Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper curing in his barn. One look at its deep color inspired him to create this singularly rich, robust Hoyo de Monterrey cigar that is as deeply satisfying as it is authentically Honduran.

Dark Sumatra is named after its wrapper tobaccos, hand-selected from the very darkest and richest Ecuadorian sun-grown, Sumatra seed leaves. Dark Sumatra also has a rich, textured CT Broadleaf binder and a special robust blend of premium Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican filler tobaccos that all contribute to the extraordinary taste of this new Hoyo de Monterrey cigar.
