Zino Davidoff was born on March, 11 1906 in modern day Ukraine. Plagued by the anti-Semitism that was prevalent in Russia at the time, Zino’s family fled their hometown and moved to Geneva, Switzerland. Since they were already involved in the cigar industry, they had little trouble opening their own cigar shop.
Zino eventually made his way to Latin America to learn more about the tobacco trade. During this excursion, he encountered his first Cuban cigar. He was floored by the quality of these cigars, and eventually marketed the Hoyo de Monterrey Chateaux Series. Zino also invented the first desktop humidor. A legendary man in the cigar industry, Zino was responsible for some of Cuba’s bestselling cigars.
However, after many disputes with Cubatabaco, Cuba’s state-run tobacco monopoly, Zino discontinued his Cuban Davidoff line and began to utilize Dominican tobacco. This allowed him to market his product to the United States, along with the rest of the world. The popularity of these cigars was unmatched at the time, and Davidoff is considered by many to be responsible for the worldwide distribution of Dominican cigars. While Zino Davidoff passed away in 1994, his legacy lives on in the continuing success of his countless offerings, both old and new.
The Zino Classic cigar is considered to be the core of Zino’s roster of products. These cigars were blended by the legendary Hendrik Kelner, and feature Ecuadorian Connecticut-seed wrapper leaves, Honduran binders, and Dominican and Honduran filler leaves. They are mild-bodied, smooth, and incredibly well-balanced, thanks to the masterful aging and rolling techniques used in their production. This is the ideal Zino cigar to start with.
More affordable than the Zino Classic line is Zino Light, which is machine-made in Switzerland. These mild stogies are made with either Brazilian or Sumatran wrapper leaves, Java binders, and fillers from Brazil and Indonesia. If you’re looking to try a Zino cigar without breaking the bank, Zino Light is an excellent place to begin.
The Zino Red Mini Cigarillos are one of our best selling Zino products. These tasty little stogies are made in Holland, and feature a Brazilian wrapper, Java binder, and Brazilian and French Burley filler leaves. As with the Classic Cigarillos, these Zino cigars come in sealed packs to ensure consistent quality.
The Zino Platinum Scepter series is one of Zino’s most prestigious offerings. These are available in several different sizes, including the XS, which is offered in tins. The rest of the cigars are offered in decorated metal cans that have a watertight pop-top to ensure the freshness and longevity of the cigars. These bold smokes utilize a blend of Dominican and Peruvian filler tobacco that is aged for 4 years and processed specifically for this cigar. The binder is from Connecticut, and the wrapper is an Ecuadorian-grown Connecticut shade. A unique cigar that is both aggressive and sweet, the Zino Platinum Scepter is an ideal smoke for all types of cigar enthusiasts.
Most recently, Zino came out with the Zino Platinum Z-Class line. These are Zino’s most powerful cigars yet, thanks to a Dominican sun-grown wrapper leaf, Peruvian Pelo de Oro Visus binder, and Honduran and Nicaraguan ligero filler blend. These come in attractive metal tins, and are surprisingly affordable. These powerhouse cigars are toasty, nutty, and bold with notes of pepper, cedar, and a hint of caramel sweetness that keeps them from becoming overpowering. Don’t hesitate to try these beauties—they will undoubtedly impress experienced and novice smokers alike.
