Behind The Scenes: Interview With Rocky Patel

We just received our copies of our August catalog, which means that right now thousands of them are making their way across the country towards all of your mailboxes. I always get excited about the new catalogs showing up, but this one stands out for me as an extra-special issue. In addition to my usual behind-the-scenes role in getting these catalogs produced, I stepped a little more to the forefront in this issue. I made my journalistic debut by getting a chance to do a 1-on-1 interview with the infamous Rocky Patel.

We are introducing a new BCP Exclusive Brand made for us by Rocky Patel, Prodigy. That of course is the catalyst for the interview and the reason for dedicating so much valuable catalog real estate to it. However, as an experienced blogger I know you guys don’t just want to read a cheesy sales pitch with Rocky and I fluffing our new brand and how great it is, so I

asked him a bunch of questions about cigars, the industry, himself, and pretty much anything else I could think of.  I think the end result came out really well, and I hope you guys all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. My favorite part is when I asked Rocky about government regulations on cigars and he just launched into a passionate dissertation on why the government’s recent trends towards higher taxes and an overall more regulated industry are misplaced and wrong. He even said verbatim “I fear the government more than I fear the competition!”

There is a whole bunch more cool stuff, I got him to talk a little about how his partnership with EO Brands will affect some of the classiest stogies on the market, how his company all got started, and how he manages to run such a professional company while maintaining a larger-than-life public image. If you just can’t wait for your copy to show up before reading, just click here for our online flash version. The interview is on pages 4 & 5.

In spite of his celebrity status and position of power within the cigar industry, he really is a nice, down to earth guy. He was more than accommodating in taking the time to speak with a lowly marketing guy like myself, and even was genuinely interested in my personal opinion of the Prodigy! It was a little intimidating to describe my experience smoking a cigar to the genius who blended it, but I love the smoke so it was easy for me to rattle off the reasons why. One of these days I’ll get around to writing up my full review on the Prodigy for our blog, but I think I’ll hold out a little longer and explain to the boss that I need a few more samples to really get it right!

The rest of the catalog is our typical outstanding fare, chock full of great deals, tons of freebies, free shipping offers, and of course the industry-leading design & photography by my two favorite marketing teammates, Zac & Dianna. Thanks again guys for another great print! We all hope you enjoy the interview and the entire catalog, and as always your feedback in genuinely appreciated.
