Weekend Round-up: New Release Announcements from Oliveros, Avo, Tatuaje, and Rare Corojo Returns
There was no shortage of stogie-news around the web this week, especially with the Pro Cigar Festival taking place in the Dominican Republic. Here are the highlights of this week’s top cigar news stories:
In a press release earlier this week, Oliveros Cigars announced the launch of a new company that will focus solely on the production and distribution of boutique brand cigars. The new company, Boutique Blends Cigars, will handle such small batch cigars such as the Swag Puro Dominicano and the Aging Room Small Batch line, as well as upcoming releases Aging Room Havao Connecticut, and Aging Room Small Batch Sumatra Quattro Prensado, which are set to debut in April of this year. After the great success in 2011 of the Aging Room M356 and Small Batch cigars, which both received high ratings and praise from Cigar Aficionado and other sources, the launch of Boutique Blends Cigars seems like a logical step for the company, in keeping with current trends. Company President Rafael Nodal was quoted as saying, “We are not producing cigars for everyone, we are introducing new blends for educated consumers that are looking for cigars with complexity and character. If you are looking for the same boring, flat and one dimensional cigar, I am sorry to say, Boutique Blends are not for you.”
In other news, industry icon Avo Uvezian will turn 86 this year, and Davidoff of Geneva will be releasing a limited edition Avo cigar to commemorate the occasion, according to Cigar Aficionado. The cigar, dubbed “La Trompeta”, is a 6 ½ x 54 torpedo, and features three circles of Connecticut leaf atop its dark wrapper to symbolize the three valves of a trumpet, in keeping with Avo’s ongoing music theme. La Trompeta marks the 11th Avo birthday release since 2001’s Avo 75th Anniversary. Look for La Trompeta to hit shelves sometime later this month.
As reported by Halfwheel.com, Pete Johnson of Tatuaje has confirmed the dimensions of the highly anticipated Little Monsters line, which is slated to debut in June. The Little Monsters line will feature smaller sizes of Tatuaje’s four previous Monster Series releases, as well as this year’s Monster edition, the Mummy. The five cigars in the line are as follows:
- Tatuaje Mini-Mumm – 5 ¾ x 42
- Tatuaje Wolfie – 5 ½ x 48
- Tatuaje Baby Face – 4 3/8 x 50
- Tatuaje Lil’ Drac – 5 x 48
- Tatuaje Frank Jr. – 5 5/8 x 44
Johnson has announced that 10,000 boxes of 10 (two of each cigar) will be produced, which is a huge increase from the super-limited production of the regular Monster Series, so hopefully this year it will be a little easier to get your hands on these scary smokes.
Lastly, this week marks the annual release of Punch’s best-selling Rare Corojo line, as well as a highly-limited run of Punch 10th Anniversary edition. Fans of these spicy stogies can look for a new batch to land on our shelves within the next couple of weeks.
So, that about does it for this week’s round-up. Here’s wishing everyone a smoke-tastic weekend, and we’ll see you all back here on Monday.
