The History of Opus X

Opus X cigars have always featured a silky Rosado wrapper leaf that is grown on Fuente’s organic tobacco plantation, Chateau de la Fuente. Located in a remote region in the Dominican Republic, the farm is situated in a tropical river valley with ideal growing conditions.

In the early 1990s, when the Fuente family began planting their first crop of this exquisite wrapper, many skeptics in the cigar industry thought it couldn’t be done. There had been many previous attempts to grow such a wrapper in the DR, and all had failed. Of course, the Fuente family knew what they were doing and they achieved the impossible.

The original name for this ambitious tobacco crop was Project X, and the Fuente family chose the name “Opus” for the unique Dominican wrapper that was the finished product. An “opus” is a masterpiece — a staggering achievement among a body of work. Needless to say, it suited the wrapper well. By combining the original and new names, Opus X was born. In the years to follow, Opus X cigars would be made to commemorate everyone from Dan Marino to Pope John Paul II. Today, it remains the pinnacle of the Arturo Fuente portfolio.
