Montecristo is an Altadis brand, producing their beautiful hand-rolled cigars out of the Tabacalera de Garcia factory in the Dominican Republic. The brand’s name is a reference to the popular Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which was a popular book to be read aloud on the rolling floor in the early 20th century.
It’s also worth noting that there is still a Cuban iteration of the Montecristo brand. While the cigars produced by this version of Montecristo are obviously unavailable in the U.S., they’ve sold extremely well elsewhere. In fact, it is estimated that Cuban Montecristo cigars account for roughly 25% of Habanos S.A.’s global cigar sales.
Today, Montecristo cigars produced in both Cuba and the Dominican Republic are still wildly popular despite the brand being relatively young for a cigar brand. In 2015, Montecristo celebrated its 80th anniversary with the limited-edition Montecristo 80 Anniversario blend. Who knows what they have in store for their upcoming milestones.
