Ashton cigars - History
Ashton cigars: The Beginning
Way before Ashton cigars became one of the best-known names in premiums, the brand was introduced by Robert Levin in 1985. Handmade in the Dominican Republic by the famous Fuente Family, the Ashton cigars brand quickly became one of the most sought-after in the world. The original Ashton cigars were initially released in six sizes: 8-9-8, Churchill, Corona, Panatela, Prime Minister and Sovereign. These six classic Ashton cigars sizes have endured the times, and are still a cornerstone to the Ashton cigars portfolio.
Ashton cigars: The Rise
In 1988, Ashton cigars launched two additional blends that would go on to become some of the brand’s most celebrated cigar lines: Ashton Aged Maduro and Ashton Cabinet Selection. Ashton Aged Maduro cigars showcase Connecticut Broadleaf wrappers that have been cured using a unique slow-fermentation process that produces a smooth, sweet taste and a rich, dark hue uniformly among the leaves. The Ashton Cabinet Selection employs select Dominican tobacco leaves that have been aged up to seven years under a creamy Connecticut Shade wrapper to produce an aromatic, complex, and well-rounded flavor.
Ashton Cigars: The Boom
During the Cigar Boom of the 1990s, Ashton cigars saw another spike in popularity. In 1993 the brand was featured in a half-page advertisement in the inaugural issue of Cigar Aficionado magazine. This marks the first use of Ashton cigars classic slogan, "Uncompromising Quality."
The Ashton cigars name had already become well-known among cigar-lovers around the world by the time the Ashton VSG was released in 1999. One of the very first full-bodied cigars to come to market, the VSG soared in popularity as it became the first of the Ashton cigars to receive high 90+ ratings from Cigar Aficionado magazine and other notable sources.
Ashton Cigars: Into The Future
In the mid 2000s Ashton cigars expanded their portfolio yet again with the introduction of the Ashton Heritage Puro Sol and Ashton Estate Sun Grown (ESG) lines, and in 2008 the brand reached a milestone achievement when Cigar Aficionado magazine ranked Ashton cigars one of the “Top 5 Brands” in the world.
In 2014 the company broke new ground with the release of the first Nicaraguan cigar under the Ashton cigars banner, the medium-to-full bodied Ashton Symmetry. Ashton cigars first new release in nearly a decade, the highly anticipated Symmetry was met with critical acclaim and numerous high industry ratings. The Robusto size earned a 92 rating from Cigar Insider, citing “ complex hickory and nougat notes underscored by toasty elements, chicory and some nuttiness.”
