The origins of the Punch brand reach back as far as 1840s Germany, where it got its name from Mr. Punch of the popular puppet show “Punch and Judy.” At the time, the cigars were sold across Europe, finding much of their success in Great Britain. In the years to come, however, ownership would change hands several times. This was only exacerbated by the Great Depression.
Like many cigar brands, Punch cigars found a home base for production in Cuba. And, as with many cigar brands, Punch split up operations when the US embargo hit. Punch still makes cigars under Cuba’s nationalized cigar industry. However, many cigar lines were sold to Villazon & Co. to sell in the American market. To this day, the Villazon factory produces the Punch cigars we all know and love in the States, along with Hoyo de Monterrey, Don Tomas, and others.
