One of the most popular Drew Estate infusions behind their acclaimed ACID series is the Connecticut-clad Tabak Especial Dulce (also available in a Maduro called Negra). And while it’s billed as ‘coffee infused,’ you don’t need to like coffee to enjoy it. Let’s talk a little about how the cigars come to taste the way they do before diving into the review.

You’ll see the cigars listed as having a core of all-Nicaraguan tobaccos. And you’d be forgiven for thinking that means the cigars are strong; looks can be deceiving. In fact, Tabak Especial Dulce barely tops out at medium-bodied, making the cigars a solid morning companion. In addition to the tobaccos, a proprietary infusion of coffee beans from Nicaragua’s Matagalapa and Jinotega mountains helps set the stage for the blend’s famed flavor profile.

Are Tabak Especial Cigars Good?

What Does Tabak Especial Dulce Taste like? (Our Cigar Review)

I said earlier that being a coffee fan isn’t a prerequisite for enjoying Tabak Especial Dulce, and that’s because the flavors smoke, to my palate at least, much closer to something like hot chocolate. There’s a bit of coffee in the background, but it’s that chocolaty—almost candy bar-like flavor laced with mellow spices and caramel—disposition that gets the spotlight. If a stronger coffee appeal is your thing, I’d recommend Tabak Negra, which delivers the earthy tones I think come closer to mimicking a cup of joe. More on that soon.

All said and done, Tabak Dulce continues to be one of my favorites among flavored and infused cigars, especially on quiet mornings.

Which Size Should You Choose?

I’ve always been a big fan of the Corona, simply because I like smaller ring gauges. The good news is that Tabak Especial doesn’t deviate much relative to the size you choose, the way the stronger cigars tend to. Just go with your gut, and you can’t go wrong.

Tabak Especial Dulce vs. Negra

I have always found that Tabak Especial Negra is a closer analog to coffee because of its Maduro wrapper. The flavors have more natural bitterness and earthy notes with a coffee vibe, but the blend is a bit stronger, too. It’s a trade-off. I personally love the morning appeal of Dulce, and its overall flavor suits my taste buds better. But again, your mileage may vary.

Pairing Options:

Coffee is the knee-jerk answer, but I’d avoid stronger brews like espresso. Dulce is pretty mellow and will easily get overpowered by anything bold. If caffeine isn’t your bag, a chocolate porter makes for an epic combo!
