Culture and cigar icon Kinky Friedman tours the West

Kinky Friedman is quite a character. He rose to prominence in the 70s fronting a band called the Texas Jewboys, performing such classics as “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to You”. He found fame and recognition touring with Bob Dylan, appearing on Saturday Night Live while claiming to hold the distinction of being the first full-blooded Jew to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. He also unsucessfully ran for Governor of Texas in 2006, campaigning with the slogans “Why the Hell Not?” and “How Hard Could It Be?”, though he did garner around 13% of the votes in the six-candidate race.

At 65 years old, we applaud Friedman, who is still out touring and promoting his multivarious wares. Besides his musical and political pursuits, the distinguished Jewish cowboy is also an accomplished author of several detective novels. But the real reason we’re profiling the man known as “The Mark Twain of Texas” is for another one of his enterprises — Kinky Friedman cigars.

Always a maverick unafraid of making candid observations, Friedman says of stogies: “I do think smoking cigars prolongs your life, I really do… It relaxes you, and you tend to just watch the lava flow.”

Not only are his cigars fantastic, but he donates much of the profit to Kinky’s Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, which is now selling Kinky Friedman’s Private Stock salsa to raise additional funds. What doesn’t this guy do?

We have stocked his cigars now for several years, and they always get a chuckle in the fulfillment department pulling the “Texas Jewboy” or “Triple Maduro Big Richard” from the shelves. The Kinky Friedman Kinkycristo, modeled after the Montecristo No. 2, is particularly popular with our customers.

Friedman is currently in Bakersfield, California on the “Go West Young Kinky Tour”, making his way up the coast. If any of our loyal readers are in the vicinity, we highly recommend you go! And if you haven’t tried his cigars yet, Kinky Friedman boxes ship free!
