In a decision that is sure to give aficionados an unwanted sense of déjà vu, Habanos, S.A. has decided to cancel the 2022 Festival del Habano. This marks the second year in a row that the event had to be nixed due to the pandemic.
Of course, last year’s cancellation wasn’t nearly as surprising. As the world collectively experienced its first winter surge in Covid cases, we could see early 2021 cancellations coming a mile away. This year felt like it was supposed to be different. Alas, due to the “…new epidemiological situation of the Coronavirus in the world,” as Habanos puts it, precautions are being taken once again.
However, if you’re looking for a silver lining to this situation, Habanos S.A.’s announcement did suggest something for cigar lovers down the road: “This company, as the world market leader, will once again working [sic] to surprise the Habanos enthusiasts in 2022.” Let’s hope there’s something to this statement. The cigar community certainly deserves a better surprise than the Omicron variant.
