Originally known as El Güegüense—pronounced ‘el-way-when-say’—and luckily for Billy’s lack of pronunciation skills (see his video below), now just ‘The Wise Man,’ this award-winning blend from Foundation Cigars transferred production from Aganorsa’s TABSA to the My Father factory in Nicaragua midyear 2024. It was an odd move on Foundation founder Nick Melillo’s part, considering that two of the brand’s blends earned spots on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of the Year previously.
For better or worse—and the who did it better argument is a debate I’ll leave to someone else, because both of those factories have signature idiosyncrasies that I’ve come to love in different ways. Under the My Father flag, however, Wise Man Maduro has a unique identity that’s rich with full-bodied spices, earth, and a dash of dark wood and mocha.
Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Key Flavors: Earth, coffee, oak, leather, black pepper
Draw: Perfect
Burn: Burns razor straight.
Body: Full-bodied with a decent nicotine kick.
I’m not going to tell you that The Wise Man is mellow, but if I’m honest, my palate grew tired of pepper bombs long ago. And if that’s your thing, more power to you. If, however, you’re looking for a cigar with a full-bodied flavor that won’t push you off a cliff, you’ll find lots to love here.

There aren’t many changes in terms of complexity, though The Wise Man starts out a little more peppery than it finishes. The flavors of earth, spices, and coffee were pretty much “on demand” throughout my sessions (I smoked two). A chocolaty mocha element popped up occasionally as an enjoyable surprise. Your mileage may vary, but to my taste buds, the cigar’s quite good.
I’m a fan of thinner ring gauges, and the Corona’s 45-minute burn time suited my preferences perfectly. Wider rings will likely be even more subdued. Again, not mellow…just less bite.

The Wise Man Maduro has after-dinner smoke written all over it, and if your go-to beverage is a warm bourbon or darker stout, you’ll be set. I’d avoid lighter beers and spirits, as the cigar’s bolder nature will likely overpower them.
