2023 is turning out to be a big year for the dark powers of Mexican San Andrés tobacco. There’s been a flood of great cigars from the big guns that employ these rich wrapper leaves, many of them for the first time ever in their brand history, and some with San Andrés as interior components as well. I think it’s safe to say that San Andrés tobaccos are wholly en vogue at the present moment, and here are a few new smokes that wear them particularly well.
Cohiba’s decadent Riviera is not only the first box-pressed release from the brand, but it’s also the only Cohiba creation thus far to employ a Mexican San Andrés wrapper leaf, as well as the first to include Nicaraguan Condega tobaccos. These groundbreaking smokes are lavish in rewarding taste, offering deep dark chocolate and espresso notes with hints of leather and a steady drizzle of subtle cream via an exceptionally crisp burn performance on each carefully-crafted stick.
While the Diesel brand is known for its bold flavor, the San Andres-wrapped Diesel Vintage introduces a unique dimension of refinement and balance to the best-selling brand. Pairing its rugged wrapper leaf with aged fillers grown in the Jalapa Valley and a Habano binder from Esteli, this silky reimagining of the best-selling Diesel line erupts with polished tones of salted earth, baking spices, almond, and oak.
The earthy-sweet Partagas Valle Verde doubles down on swarthy San Andrés, using it not only as a wrapper leaf but also as a filler component. Taking its name from the volcanic soils of Veracruz, Mexico, where its exceptional wrapper leaves are grown, the Valle Verde (“Green Valley”) completes its impressive blend recipe with vintage 2015 shade-grown Cameroon binders and Nicaraguan Jalapa and Esteli Ligeros from 2020. The resulting smoke is steeped in impressions of bold pepper, sugar cane, and natural cacao that will break up the day brilliantly with tasty relaxation.
La Gloria Cubana’s first-ever release to showcase a San Andrés wrapper, the Serie S gracefully balances earth, leather, and spices in its full-bodied brew of righteous flavor. Available in 7 x 56 Presidente, 6 x 60 Gigante, and 5 x 56 Robusto Gordo sizes in natural or maduro varieties, these big-ring smokes glow with rich nuances of espresso, pepper, and classic tobacco sweetness through a super-cool burn and wide open draw.
