Getting a new humidor can be exciting, especially if itâs your first. However, you canât just start throwing all of your cigars into a new humidor as soon as you get it. A humidor must be prepared or âseasonedâ to ensure its interior is humid enough to keep cigars fresh rather than drying them out. Here, weâll show you two easy methods for seasoning your new humidor. Youâll also find an instructional video below if you need more details (or if you just hate reading in general).
Without a doubt, the easiest way to season a humidor is by using humidity packs. Just leave the appropriate number of packs in the humidor and all you have to do is wait. Generally, youâll have to wait about two weeks, but when you enjoy that first fresh cigar from your humidor, youâll know it was worth it.
Wiping down your humidor will have it ready to use faster than using humidity packs. However, it is a little more labor-intensive. Youâll also need to make sure you have the necessary items for wiping down a humidor: a small container, a plastic bag, distilled water (or, better yet, PG solution), and a clean sponge thatâs free of chemical treatments or scents. If you donât have a sponge, a clean cloth will work. Just donât use any paper towels or napkins.
Now, all you have to do is pour the water/PG solution into the container, wet the sponge or cloth, and start wiping down the humidorâs interior. Use just enough moisture to wet the wood â thereâs no need to soak it. Then, place the plastic bag in the humidor with the damp (not soaked) sponge on top of it. Close up the humidor and come back to repeat this process the next day. After two or three wipe downs, your humidor should reach optimal humidity.
