If you are new to cigars, you may be under the impression that there are simply high-quality tobacco plants and low-quality tobacco plants. While it is obviously true that there are different types of tobacco seeds out there, thatâs only half the story. One of the most impactful variables when it comes to a cigarâs strength and flavor is actually which leaves from the plant are being used. Take some time to learn more about these different leaves and the role they play in cigar blending.
Starting with the leaves closest to the base of the plant, we have Volado tobacco. Kept out of direct sunlight for most of the plantâs lifespan, these leaves are generally very weak in both strength and flavor. That being said, they also burn astonishingly well. This makes them useful as binders, and sometimes as a filler when mixed with more robust, flavorful tobaccos.
The middle of the tobacco plant is where youâll find Seco leaves. This âsweet spotâ is typically used by blenders to tweak the overall flavor of a cigar. Their mild taste makes them the perfect filler for many mellow cigars, or they can be used to soften the flavor of other, stronger leaves.
Speaking of stronger leaves, that brings us to Ligero tobacco. Found at the very top of the tobacco plant, Ligero leaves are used to bring a kick to any blend. If Seco leaves bring the flavor, Ligero leaves add body to a cigar. Due to their powerful profile and slow-burning nature, Ligero leaves are often found at the center of a cigarâs filler, tempered by other leaves. That being said, if you see a cigar with âLigeroâ in its name, you can expect a strong, full-bodied smoke.
You can also hear the founder of West Tampa Tobacco Co., Rick Rodriguez, discuss these different tobacco leaves for yourself.
