As the story goes, Toscano cigars were created by a sort of happy accident way back in early 1800s Italy. It is said that one day, several tobacco leaves were drying in the summer sun, only to be drenched by a sudden rainstorm. After the cloudburst, the temperature began to rise again, causing the leaves to ferment in the increasing heat. Rather than discarding the fermented tobacco, they decided to use it anyway. The resulting cigars were sold to the citizens of Florence and had a surprisingly positive reception.
Needless to say, they continued to make them. Today, they’re known as Toscano cigars, and have garnered a reputation not only for their taste, but also their rustic, imperfect shape.
