Doug Wood, founder of La Perla Habana cigars started marketing his product from the ground up. He began going around to restaurants and nightclubs, trying to find anyone who was a cigar smoker. Upon finding these people, Wood would then offer them one of his La Perla Habana cigars in hopes of getting some feedback. His hard work paid off, and La Perla Habana cigars, as well as it’s sister line, Black Pearl, have done exceedingly well in a short amount of time. When Wood entered the cigar industry in 1996, it wasn’t necessarily an ideal time for an outsider to make his name in a competitive business. His main priority was La Perla Habana cigars, but he had to work as a driver in Hollywood in order to pay the bills.
The reason why La Perla Habana cigars always did so well, according to Wood, is that the mom and pop shops gave him a chance. The retailers that couldn’t get product from the major vendors tried out his cigars and realized they were better, and more affordable. This created a buzz around La Perla Habana which resulted in it’s rise throughout the industry. In his own words, “We make cigars one at a time, and we sell cigars one box at a time.”
When Doug Wood wanted to create a cigar that he knew would represent him and his business, he decided to go to the Toraño family. He worked closely with them, and they now manufacture both his La Perla Habana cigars, as well as the Black Pearl cigars. The La Perla Habana cigars are made in Danli, Honduras at the Toraño factory.
